Election of 1912 Comes to Life in AP History Class...

Billy-Jones.JPG
  • Ms. Henry's AP US History II classes recently held a political rally for the election of 1912. The classes were divided into three groups to represent and support the three major candidates in this important and unusual election from America's past. There were three major candidates running for election, as Teddy Roosevelt broke away from the Republican Party to form his own Progressive Party. He was challenging the Republican incumbent, William Howard Taft, who Roosevelt previously supported after his tenure as President. The Democratic challenger was Woodrow Wilson, governor of New Jersey who was known to be a reformer. Each group was given the challenge of presenting their candidate's views in an exciting way that would entice voters to support them. The groups had a team member dress up as their candidate, and was able to decorate a classroom wall in favor of their candidate. Some groups created political films and commercials, while others threw out Mini "Teddy" bears to the class in honor of Roosevelt. There were even some Taft and Roosevelt cupcakes. Each student was required to present a speech, without cues, outlining a part of their candidate's political beliefs. In the actual election, Roosevelt took voters away from the Republican party, thereby splitting the vote, allowing Woodrow Wilson to win. This taught Americans that a viable third party could influence and election.

  • Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” This Christmas season, the Interact Club organized their annual Adopt-a-Family project to help provide gifts to the less fortunate. Mrs. Dacles, the club's coordinator, received wish lists from 25 families registered with the Father English Community Center. Interact members then wrote up tags for each gift so members of the DePaul Catholic community could “adopt” individuals and purchase the appropriate gifts. Several clubs and sport teams, including the Student Council, Parent Council, Swim and Hockey teams, as well as many individuals and families participated in this project. Over 240 gifts were provided for these families. After all the gifts were submitted to the Interact Club, the club members wrapped all of them and added candy for each family before they were distributed to Father English Community Center. Because of the Adopt-a-Family project, 25 families were greeted with presents under the tree on Christmas morning. The DePaul Interact Club is sponsored by the Wayne Rotary.
