The Honor Societies
Honor Societies
Membership in one of DePaul Catholic High School’s Honor Societies is formal recognition of a student’s academic performance and accomplishments in a given field of study. Membership in an Honor Society grants students an opportunity to meet other highly motivated students who have similar academic interests and provides an opportunity for networking and friendship building.
The National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is an association whose objectives are to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the students of DePaul Catholic High School.
The name of the chapter is the Holy Spirit Chapter, and membership is based upon scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Candidates must have spent at least one semester at DePaul Catholic High School and be members of the junior or senior class. To be eligible for evaluation, juniors and seniors must have a 3.7 weighted grade point average (Please note: 3.699 does not meet the 3.7 benchmark) as determined by national guidelines and the school's grading system.
DePaul Catholic's World Language Honor Society
DePaul Catholic High School's World Languages Honor Society was established having a two-fold purpose: (a) to promote interest in the study of the various languages and cultures of the world and (b) to give recognition to scholarship achievement in the study of these languages.
Membership shall be restricted to juniors or seniors currently enrolled in the third year or higher of study in a World Language. Candidates must (a) have achieved, and continue to maintain, an average of B+ or above in their current World Language course of study; (b) maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above; (c) be recommended by the faculty of the World Languages Department; (d) have demonstrated excellence in reading, writing, listening and speaking in their chosen target language; (e) be a member in good standing of the DePaul Catholic community and (f) agree to adhere to the bylaws of the society.
Mu Alpha Theta
Mu Alpha Theta is a national high school and junior/community college mathematics club for honors students that is co-sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Mathematical Association of America. The name Mu Alpha Theta was constructed from the Greek lettering for the phonemes M, A, and TH.
The mission of Mu Alpha Theta is to provide a method for schools to recognize and encourage those students who enjoy and excel in mathematics.
National Science Honor Society
The purpose of this organization shall be to encourage participation in and recognition of scientific and intellectual thought, to advance the students' knowledge of classical and modern science, to communicate with the scientific community, to aid the civic community with its comprehension of science, and to encourage students to participate in community service and, in turn, encourage a dedication to the pursuit of scientific knowledge that benefits all mankind. This is accomplished through monthly meetings through discussions of different areas of science, participation in science fairs and/or other science competitions, as well as service to the community.
The Alexander Hamilton Historical Society
The purpose of this organization is to promote historical research and scholarship while engaging in activities to enrich the DePaul Catholic Community and the Northern New Jersey area. The Society is sponsored by DePaul Catholic High School and the National History Club.
Saint Vincent de Paul Honor Society
Students are eligible for induction/membership if they are a current senior, have completed 13 quarters in courses representing Religious or Theological Studies (appropriate exceptions made for transfer students), have attained a grade point average of at least 3.0 (B) in such courses, have gone above and beyond the Christian Service Program requirements each school year and/or willingly served the DePaul Catholic community through Mass involvement, event setup, tour guides, attending weekday Masses, etc. (not for service hours or group involvement), have participated in at least one of the following: March for Life, Midnight Run, Eva’s Village, as well as other service opportunities offered, have completed service outside of DePaul Catholic, have upheld values when faced with difficult situations, have maintained appropriate attendance, according to the handbook’s attendance and late policies, have completed the honor society application, including all verification and recommendation components, with signatures of all supervisors of service, unrelated to Christian Service Program hours
